Understand The Importance of Communication - Overcome the Barriers to Effective Communication

Communication is the process of exchanging and imparting information. It is a means to share and convey thoughts, ideas and feelings and to ask for something. The information, ideas, thoughts and requests are made using spoken or written words, visual images and body language.

A communication can be considered effective when the receiver understands the actual message that a sender delivered and meets the sender's goal. But many people fail to communicate their messages effectively. And this is one of the reasons for communication problems such as misinterpretations, conflicts, disagreement and distrust.

There are two types of communication. One is verbal communication and the other is nonverbal communication. There are two communication styles namely formal communication and informal communication. And all these involve the exchange of information between you and others either an individual or a group. Another form of communication that is important and determines a person's quality of life is internal communication or the things that a person talks internally.

The most common form of communication is face to face conversation. But studies show that when someone speaks, the listener takes in only a small percentage of his words. What's more important is the sender's tone of voice. A large amount of communication is delivered and established through body language and nonverbal cues such as eye contact, facial expressions and posture or stance.

Tools that are commonly used for sending and receiving messages include television, electronic devices and multimedia such as teleconferencing. But the tools are effective only if they can evoke human emotions. This is one of the reasons why using visual images combined with words and sounds or music help in delivering a message.
