Internet is the best source to make lots of money | marketing ...

For Yanik Silver, who immigrated to the United States from Russia when he was a toddler, America has lived up to its reputation as a land of boundless opportunity ? in his case, it was the opportunity to build up his business and make lots of money on the Internet.

The entrepreneurial spirit struck Yanik at an early age. At 14, when many teenagers are busy getting into trouble, Yanik was busy laying the foundation of his future business. Not any business, mind you, but one that would eventually turn him into a high profit-generating Internet marketing guru.

That is why Yanik is featured, along with other successful, self-employed entrepreneurs, in a new book, ?The Official Get Rich Guide to Information Marketing on the Internet? by Robert Skrob and Bob Regnerus. The book, out in September 2008, is the sequel to last year?s ?The Official Get Rich Guide to Information Marketing.?

Yanik?s story begins in his youth, but it doesn?t stop there. He started out helping his father, a self-employed medical equipment repairman, boost his business by cold-calling on doctors, doing telemarketing, and getting and following up on sales leads. ?I learned sales skills early on,? he says. ?As soon as I heard about direct marketing, I was ready to jump into it.?

And jump he did ? by learning tricks of the trade from renowned marketing masters like Jay Abraham, Dan Kennedy, Ted Nichols, Joe Sugarman and Jeff Paul. At only 17, ?I started devouring every possible resource,? Yanik recalls.

He used his expanding expertise to advise doctors on their marketing strategies, creating and selling high-priced materials to dermatologists and, later, to eye surgeons and other medical specialists.

Although Yanik?s marketing business was doing well, his real chance for growth and expansion came with the advent of the Internet in the late 1990s. ?I looked at how I could use it for direct marketing,? he says. ?The advantages were great ? speed of delivery, no cost, and I could literally put up a site for a few hundred bucks.?

Adds co-author Skrob, president of the Tallahassee, FL- based Information Marketing Association: ?One of the best things about Internet information marketing is the ease with which you can start doing it. Whether you?re selling memberships, e-books or other online products, you can make money anywhere, at any time, without lifting a finger.?

Since a well-structured website is the key to generating sales, Yanik spent some sleepless nights figuring out how to create a fully automated money-making website. ?Once, I jumped out of bed at 3 AM to register a domain name that had just ?come? to me. I started working on it the next day.? Then he got his product ?up and running? and within several months, Yanik reports ? I had a six-figure website.?

Hardly an overnight success, Yanik spent several years learning direct response, copywriting, mail order, and other fundamentals of the Internet marketing, ?all of which played a role in my success online.?

Today, Yanik has 25 websites and products in five marketplaces. He manages his businesses by leveraging his activities. ?If I am going to do an interview, I transcribe it at the same time and turn it into a multipart autoresponder,? he explains. ?That way, it goes out as a follow-up to people after they?ve gotten on my list.?

He also outsources parts of his business that he is not skilled at ? such as website design. ?I still have no idea how to put up a site. But that?s a $50-per-hour activity so I get someone to do it for me. I would much rather do the $1,000-per-hour tasks.?

Focusing only on the essential parts of his business, Yanik hosts one large seminar each year (UndergroundOnlineSeminar.com), runs two mastermind groups, sells DVDs of his seminar, and produces an $87-a-month newsletter. He also pushes another one of his sites, InternetLifestyle.com.

All that is made possible with the Internet, Skrob says. ?No matter where in the world you live, you can advertise to customers in Japan as easily as you can advertise to the people around the corner.?

New dimension of physics research: Cutting the graphene cake

ScienceDaily (July 25, 2012) ? Researchers at The University of Manchester have demonstrated that graphene can be used as a building block to create new 3D crystal structures which are not confined by what nature can produce.

Sandwiching individual graphene sheets between insulating layers in order to produce electrical devices with unique new properties, the method could open up a new dimension of physics research.

Writing in Nature Materials, the scientists show that a new side-view imaging technique can be used to visualize the individual atomic layers of graphene within the devices they have built. They found that the structures were almost perfect even when more than 10 different layers were used to build the stack.

This surprising result indicates that the latest techniques of isolating graphene could be a huge leap forward for engineering at the atomic level.

This development gives more weight to graphene's suitability as a major component in the next generation of computer chips.

The researchers' side-view imaging approach works by first extracting a thin slice from the centre of the device. This is similar to cutting through a rock to reveal the geological layers or slicing into a chocolate gateaux to reveal the individual layers of icing.

The scientists used a beam of ions to cut into the surface of the graphene and dig a trench on either side of the section they wanted to isolate. They then removed a thin slice of the device.

Wonder material graphene is a two dimensional material consisting of a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb or chicken wire structure. It is the thinnest material in the world and yet is also one of the strongest. It conducts electricity as efficiently as copper and outperforms all other materials as a conductor of heat.

Demonstrating its remarkable properties won Professor Andre Geim and Professor Kostya Novoselov the Nobel prize for Physics in 2010. The University of Manchester is building a state-of-the-art National Graphene Institute to continue to lead the way in graphene research.

Dr Sarah Haigh, from The University of Manchester's School of Materials, said: "The difference is that our slices are only around 100 atoms thick and this allows us to visualize the individual atomic layers of graphene in projection.

"We have found that the observed roughness of the graphene is correlated with their conductivity. Of course we have to make all our electrical measurements before cutting into the device. We were also able to observe that the layers were perfectly clean and that any debris left over from production segregated into isolated pockets and so did not affect device performance.

"We plan to use this new side view imaging approach to improve the performance of our graphene devices."

A Primer on Roofing: Why You Should Install Metal Roof in Your ...

Winter period in New Hampshire can be unendurable and lengthy, that's why its citizens need a sturdy roofing system to safeguard them against the severe elements. Just so you know, winter months in the north and mountainous spots of Manchester are harsh. Metal is the kind of roof that could take the tension of snow, along with hurricanes and tropical storms which every now and then develop due to the state's location along the coast.

Nor'easter s are no foreigner to New Hampshire. These violent climate conditions create fierce winds, precipitation, thunder, and lightning when they struck the state. Since blizzards are awfully intense, homes in New Hampshire are developed with the best defense. Metal roofss play an extensive function as this component is sturdy to negative weather conditions. In regards to toughness, metal is 2nd to slate which stays unprecedented in terms of toughness as well as life expectancy.

When snowfall hits and accumulates, the roof is subject to heavy tension. Old or poorly-installed roofss can end in an unfortunate collapse. However, with the best metal roofing, property owners do not have to fret pertaining to the degree of snowfall when it accumulates. Special steel roofss are produced to hold the weight of the snowfall and constructed to get rid of snowfall by sliding it down when it accumulates.

One more advantage of metal roofing is its tenacity from rainfall and wind. Tornadoes or hurricanes result in shingles as well as panels to come loose and extricate, nevertheless, steel is produced to survive critical wind speeds. Even if wind forces drizzle in to the shingles during a blizzard, water will certainly have a challenging time penetrating because of the strength of the material.

Metal's exceptional resilience and its other benefits can be accomplished if efficiently installed by experienced roofers. Roofers state that installation is essential for sturdiness, so select a dependable roofer with years of experience to build your roof for you. Quality metal roofing New Hampshire houses have will surely last for years. Metal roofing components come with manufacturer and roofer warranties to back you up.

Catastrophic events are unavoidable, but you can promptly repair the stability of your roof through the quality roof repair Manchester NH businesses deliver. Sun wins China's first Olympic men's gold in pool

Sun Yang became the first Chinese Olympic men's swimming champion with victory in the 400m freestyle final in a near-world record time at London Games on Saturday.

Sun, 20, swept past South Korean defending champion Park Tae-Hwan at the final turn and surged home to win gold in three minutes 40.14 seconds.

He missed out on German Paul Biedermann's 2009 world record by just 0.07secs and climbed on to the lane rope to punch the air in triumph.

Sun, the 1500m freestyle world record holder, who trains in Australia under Grant Hackett's former coach Denis Cotterell, was too strong for Park, who tumbled to his first defeat to the Chinese star in international competition.

It was a compelling tussle between the two young Asian superstars with 22-year-old Park under world record pace before he was burnt off by Sun.

Sun was in tears as he spoke to reporters following his magnificent victory.

"The feeling is very nice, it's beautiful," Sun said. "It's a big dream come true for me.

"I have to (say thank you) to my coach, my parents, my friends and all the people that help me.

"Because it's the Olympic Games, I felt a little bit nervous at the start, then at the end, I felt that I could get a medal."

Park, who was reinstated to the final on appeal after being disqualified for a false start in winning his morning heat, finished in 3:42.06 while American Peter Vanderkaay in 3:44.69.

"I swam really well, it was a little bit of a pity that I came second," Park said.

"I really regret losing my Olympic title, but there was a lot going on for me this morning, so I feel a little bit bad.

"There was a problem with my start this morning, but it was solved.

"I swam as well as I can, I have no regrets about this morning."

Different Types of Life Insurance | Life & Health Insurance

Life insurance is very popular among society since it gives many advantages for the insured people. One of life insurance types is universal life insurance. If you want to have this kind of insurance you should pay the premiums directly to the company, especially to the cash value account. The interest of this insurance will be credited to the account and you will get deduction of insurance cost from that account. There is no cash value in this type of insurance so the policy will terminate. It functions to separate the insurance costs from the function of interest or cash value in the policy.

? ? ? ? ? ??Due to the effectiveness of the cost insurance and the cash value of the policy, the universal life insurance is called with flexible life insurance. The strength of this life insurance is the premium rates that can be changed at any time as long as the insured people have enough money in their cash value account to pay the insurance costs. Another type of life insurance is variable life insurance that offers both saving account and life insurance policy. So, the insured people should pay certain amount of money in a market-based savings account and they will also get payment when they die.?

Dollar Bludgeoned by Euro and Risk Rebound, GDP Data on Deck

The dollar?s fortunes changed quickly this week. Through the opening half of the period, the greenback looked like it was on the cusp of a credible bull trend ? led by the progress of a two-year low for EURUSD. Yet, in the past 48 hours, those hopes were dashed with an aggressive two-day tumble that drove the Dow Jones FXCM Dollar Index (ticker = USDollar) to test a two-month low. Technical traders will recognize that this swing brings the benchmark back to the floor of congestion that has discouraged a clear trend (bullish and bearish) since the beginning of June. In other words, this dramatic decline fits comfortably within a well-worn range. Fundamentally speaking, the rise in risk appetite and subsequent hit to the greenback can arguably be tied to a natural correction from market-wide risk aversion.

Looking across the financial headlines Thursday, it was easy to see what the markets were attributing the strong performance in capital markets and high yield currencies to: stimulus-leaning comments from ECB President Mario Draghi. We have seen relatively benign comments lead to stark market reactions in the past ? the masses will often look for fundamental evidence to support its bias ? but the commentary made by the Euro-area monetary authority wasn?t particularly remarkable (more on that below). Instead, what we were witnessing was mere settling of preexisting fears that still have fundamental grounding but not the catalyst to graduate us to the next level of deleveraging.

If a spark is what we are looking for to instill a sense of conviction for risk appetite (or turn us back to the dollar-favored risk aversion), then the first read of 2Q US GDP is the right indicator for the job. There are few better reads on global economic health (an indelible component of investor sentiment) than the quarterly growth reading for the world?s largest economy. The consensus for the past quarter?s performance is an annualized 1.4 percent pace of expansion ? a slowdown from the previous quarter?s 1.9 percent figure and 3.0 percent reading through the final months of 2011. If the market?s are genuinely bullish leaning, an upside surprise could lift the SP 500 and AUDUSD to permanent breaks. That said, it is hard to envisage a market reassured by a smaller downshift when the bigger backdrop for global markets is still in turmoil. There is always the argument that a significantly worse read could also boost stimulus expectations ? but we are seeing such will fading.

Euro: Market Reacts to ECB President Draghi?s Support Vow

EURUSD?s performance this past session was notable as the pair?s biggest rally since June 29 and a marked rebound back above the midpoint of its historic range. That said, how strong was the Euro this past session. The fundamental turbulent currency posted gains against the FX market?s two preferred safe havens, but ended the session notably lower against most of its other counterparts. This throws a wrench in the assumption that ECB President Draghi?s comments Thursday morning touched off the Euro?s and market?s rally. The remarks that the market was tuning into started that officials would do whatever was necessary to preserve the shared currency. This would be a provocative statement if it weren?t so overused and one of the most consistently unfulfilled promises made by central bankers and lawmakers the world over. This vow could loosely be interpreted as a turn in the ECB?s reticence to break mandate and participate in stimulus and financial efforts, but there is little to suggest they would move any faster than the EU itself. Meanwhile, Spanish 10-year yields are just below 7 percent.

British Pound Wins its Biggest Intraday Rally Since May 2009

While there was a lot of headline space dedicated to what Draghi said Thursday morning, the comments made by Bank of England Governor Mervyn King were arguably more provoking. What can central banks do that escalates their effort and genuinely expands their crisis fight ability beyond what has already been attempted? Coordination. King stated that individual programs were no longer effective and a true crisis solution would have to be a collective effort. Such a possibility is encouraging for all risk sensitive assets and currencies; but perhaps with a UK source, the sterling would see the most benefit. The biggest four-hour rally from GBPUSD since May 2009 certainly supports that suggestion. This is especially true considering just yesterday the country reported a deeper recession than expected and there is rate cut expectations next week.

New Zealand Dollar Outpaces the Majors after RBNZ Hold

There were some remarkable performances this past trading day, but the kiwi dollar stood at the top of the pack. Recently, the Aussie dollar has taken the lead thanks to easing of its extreme rate cut expectations; but not this time around. An extra push was conferred by the RBNZ after it announced that a hold on rates was appropriate. Meanwhile, it is worth restating that the 10-year yield for the New Zealand government bond is at a 39 bps premium to its Aussie counterpart.

Australian Dollar Moving Step for Step with the SP 500

Is AUDUSD the perfect risk barometer in the FX market? On the one side is a safe haven that is only desired in the most dire of liquidity circumstances. Alternatively, the Aussie dollar is dependent on risk not just to feed appetite for yield but to also ensure the RBA doesn?t pursue more easing that lowers its benchmark. For evidence, the three-month rolling correlation between SP 500 and AUDUSD is 0.86 ? very strong.

Japanese Yen Hit by Risk Trends, Tumble Back into Deflation

Relief. With a rebound in traditional risk trends, carry trade has picked up and Japanese policy officials have seen the pressure on taken any effort they can to devalue their currency ease. Finance Minister Azumi took the opportunity to support Draghi?s vow to the euro (a hat tip for his help with the yen). Meanwhile, it is worth noting that USDJPY rose for the first time in seven days and has risen only three times in 15 days.

Gold Breaks Four Month Congestion Without Conviction

It has finally happened. Gold has traded outside of the closing congestion pattern that has defined its movements since mid-March. That said, it was the most unceremonious transition a trader could have hoped for. A slow move out of the consistent congestion we have seen with this benchmark suggests it is a move that will fail without further support. If the metal is to salvage the effort, it needs clear stimulus hope.

FACT CHECK: Romney-Bain contacts outlasted exit

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has said he had no active role in Bain Capital, the private equity firm he founded, after he exited in February 1999 to take over Salt Lake City's Winter Olympics bid. But according to Bain associates and others familiar with Romney's actions at the time, he stayed in regular contact with his partners over the following months, tending to his partnership interests and negotiating his separation from the company.

Those familiar with Romney's discussions with his Bain partners said the contacts included several meetings in Boston, the company's home base, but were limited to matters that did not affect the firm's investments or other management decisions. Yet Romney continued to oversee his partnership stakes even as he disengaged from the firm, personally signing or approving a series of corporate and legal documents through the spring of 2001, according to financial reports reviewed by The Associated Press.

The details of Romney's contacts with his Bain partners between his 1999 departure and his separation from the company in mid-2001 could show how involved he was ? either as CEO or passive investor ? in several multimillion-dollar investment deals, bankruptcies and a spate of layoffs and overseas job shifts at Bain-owned companies that reportedly occurred during that span. Romney's role became a campaign issue in recent weeks because corporate records from the time showed his interests in some of those deals ? despite his insistence that he gave up any decision-making authority once he left Bain.

"When partners depart a private equity company and are no longer active, there are various ways that their interests may be affected," said Colin C. Blaydon, director of Dartmouth University's Center for Private Equity and Entrepreneurship. "In some cases it may not be affected at all, but they still own points in the funds and the carried interest that is paid as part of their partnership stake. It's entirely possible to step back from a previous management role, but that all depends on the arrangements they make and the management structure created to replace them."

A clear accounting of Romney's contacts with Bain has been hampered by his presidential campaign's reluctance to discuss the period in detail and complicated by conflicting accounts in some of Romney's comments and financial reports. Both the Romney campaign and Bain have declined to provide documentary materials that could shed light on Romney's role after 1999.

Romney's campaign says that once he agreed to head the Olympics bid, he was no longer "involved in the management of that business or the investment decisions that occurred." Campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul added that "it took some time to transfer his ownership to the other partners, which is not surprising given the growth and success of the firm."

Romney testified during a 2002 Massachusetts court case that he flew back and forth between Boston and Salt Lake City frequently in the first half of 1999, returning at least four times to attend board meetings of office supply giant Staples Inc., which had named him a director. Romney said nothing about his dealings with Bain during that testimony, which came during a legal challenge to his Massachusetts residency that was aimed at thwarting his campaign for governor.

Several associates now say that Romney made repeated trips between Salt Lake and Boston, where he met at times with his former partners, mostly to discuss his severance from the firm. The Boston Globe reported last week that Romney also met with his Bain partners at a 15th anniversary celebration in Palm Beach, Fla., in early 1999.

"Some were group conversations. Some were one on one," said a legal expert familiar with Romney's discussions with his Bain partners. This person, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss confidential business dealings, said that Romney did not relinquish his Bain ownership after taking the Olympics role but that Romney took care to avoid the day-to-day role of a corporate manager.

This person said that when Romney left, a five-partner management committee was already in place. That account echoed a similar version given by Edward Conard, a former Bain partner who donated $1 million last year to a political committee supporting Romney's presidential run.

"There was a management committee running Bain to transition from Mitt to a new structure," Conard said last week during an interview on MSNBC. At the same time, Conard said, Romney's exit was complicated by the fact that "Mitt's names were on the documents as chief executive and sole owner of the company."

Those documents, filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, contain dozens of references to Romney and his holdings. An AP analysis of thousands of SEC filings in that three-year period found at least 39 documents in which Romney was listed as sole shareholder, president or director of investment funds that controlled large stakes in Bain-related companies.

Some legal experts said those records show that Romney remained the "controlling person," as some filings described him, in the deals that Bain struck in that span. "From a corporate law point of view, it would not be kosher to hold him out as president when he had no role in the company," said George Washington University law professor Arthur E. Wilmarth Jr.

Other experts cautioned that while federal "beneficial ownership" rules require the listing of partners whose voting stakes exceed 5 percent of an investment in a public company, any partner with voting power in the same investment could also exercise authority. While Romney controlled the management entity running Bain, his partners controlled connected general partnerships that directed the investment funds. As a result, Romney was not the only Bain partner with lines of authority over the investments cited in the SEC filings.

"Anyone who has voting power over the shares could be the owner for reporting purposes," said Brian J. Lane, a partner at the Washington law firm of Gibson Dunn and former director of the SEC's Corporate Finance Division, which oversees corporate filings.

In addition to those SEC reports, other corporate documents obtained by the AP show Romney's personal signature at least 10 times on large stock transactions or ownership statements tied to Bain investment deals at the time. Those documents include Romney's signature on federal stock forms approving the sales of large stakes in circuit board manufacturer DDi Corp. The company went into bankruptcy in 2003.

SEC filings by Bain also showed that Romney's digital signature? a legal version of his personal script ? appeared on at least 18 other stock ownership records between 1999 and 2001. The filings were part of Bain investments in Therma Wave, a heat testing company; Wesley Jessen Visioncare; and Staples Inc.

Romney's defenders argue that such signings reflected his limited role as a Bain partner and investor, but not as the firm's manager. One former senior Bain partner said that once Romney had accepted the Olympics position, he would "make suggestions but not decisions." The former partner added that Romney's extensive partnership stakes required him to respond to ? and at times approve ? a succession of ownership documents stemming from the company's continuing investment deals.

Documents reviewed by the AP also showed that Romney signed several power-of-attorney statements that were used repeatedly during the transition, allowing other senior Bain partners and several lawyers for Bain to represent his interests in the investment deals the company struck between 1999 and 2001.

Blaydon said such moves are common in private equity deals and also could have provided Romney with legal flexibility as he moved to disengage from Bain. "If he wanted to dial in by phone, he could have," Blaydon said. "There's no doubt he could have played a bigger role if he wanted, but if he wanted to have minimal involvement, he had that flexibility."

Other private equity experts questioned whether Romney's continuing financial stakes could be so easily separated from his longtime CEO role. Victor Fleischer, a University of Colorado law professor and private equity expert who urged corporate tax code reforms during congressional testimony last year, said Romney could not simply waive his duties as Bain's CEO and major shareholder.

Many of Bain's investment funds and several of Romney's own managing partnership entities were based in Delaware. Fleischer said the state's corporate code required that the fund manager "perform whatever partnership duties they have with the greatest attention. He was still president, CEO and sole shareholder of some of the management companies for some of these funds, and under Delaware law, owed fiduciary duties to his investors. If you can't fulfill your fiduciary duties as owner, you have to waive your partnerships."

Charles M. Elson, a University of Delaware finance professor and an authority on the state's corporate laws, countered that Delaware law "is flexible enough to give (Bain) leeway in their decision-making. The partnership law is enabling. They could make decisions without him."

Even Romney's explanation of his role at Bain after 1999 appears to have shifted in recent years, as shown in notes that his financial trustee provided in successive presidential candidate financial reports submitted in 2007 and in 2011 to the U.S. Office of Government Ethics. The lawyer administering Romney's finances, R. Bradford Malt, said in 2007 that Romney did not have "any active role with any Bain Capital entity" after 1999. In 2011, that explanation broadened, saying Romney had also "not been involved in the operations of any Bain Capital entity in any way."

Both explanations appear at odds with statements attributed to Romney in a corporate press release from July 1999, five months after he left to take over the Olympic bid. The press release, recently posted on the Daily Kos website, announced the departure that year from Bain by two of Romney's founding partners. The release also stated that Romney remained Bain's CEO while on a "part-time leave of absence" to head the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

D'Jamila Salem, a former Boston public relations executive who authored the press release, recalled recently that Bain officials provided the quotes and information about Romney at the time.

Salem was listed on the release as a press contact along with Joshua Bekenstein, a founding Bain partner. Bekenstein also substituted at times for Romney on SEC filings under power of attorney during that period. Bekenstein, still a Bain managing director, was one of several company executives who did not respond to calls from AP for comment.

More worries for the wealthy? Inheritance tax to jump unless Congress acts

The federal inheritance tax rate will jump to 55 percent in 2013 unless Congress acts. ?Republicans and Democrats disagree on the best plan. ?But a stalemate will result in higher inheritance taxes than either party wants.

By Ron Scherer,?Staff writer / July 26, 2012

The way Congressional Republicans see it, farmers will have to sell their land and small businesses will have to put their firms on the auction block if nothing is done to prevent the inheritance tax from rising next year.

Their solution: completely end what they call ?the death tax.?

But, on the other side of the aisle, Congressional Democrats view eliminating the tax as yet another gift to the ultra-wealthy. Under President Obama?s plan, the rate would actually rise from current levels.

Unless the two sides can find a common ground, the estate tax will rise far higher than either party's proposal. The change in estate tax rates is one of several tax law changes slated to occur in January, when the Bush era income tax cuts will expire.?

Currently, the inheritance tax is 35 percent with a $5 million exemption per estate. On January 1, the rate jumps to 55 percent with a $1 million exemption.

According to Republicans, citing the non-partisan Joint Committee on Taxation, this would increase the number of estates that would pay the tax from 3,600 to 55,200.

?Remember, Americans work all their life paying income taxes, property taxes, sales taxes?only to have the government raid their farms, ranches and small businesses when they pass away,? said Utah?s Sen. Orin Hatch (R), the ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee in a statement.

President Obama has proposed moving the top rate to 45 percent with an exemption of $3.5 million per estate. That would be same formula that was in effect in 2009.

However, analysts who follow the issue say not all Democrats support Obama. ?The Democrats are all over the map,? says Pete Davis of Davis Capital Investment Ideas, which supplies Washington intelligence to Wall Street firms. ?Some are silent or in favor the Republican position, some Democrats would like to see a lower rate,? he says.

Gun Sales Surge in Wake of Colorado Theater Shooting | FOX8.com ...

Posted on: 10:01 pm, July 25, 2012, by Suzanne Stratford, updated on: 06:21am, July 26, 2012

BROADVIEW HEIGHTS, Ohio ? In the wake of the Colorado movie massacre, gun stores have reported an increase in sales.

By some estimates, stores across the country have seen sales jump from 40 ? 60 percent.

Last Friday, a heavily armed gunman opened fire inside a packed Aurora, Colorado theater killing 12 people and wounding dozens more.

Police say, James Holmes, 24, carefully planned and executed the onslaught and was armed with an arsenal of bullets, rifles and tear gas. In response to that terror, bloodshed and panic gun and ammunition sales are skyrocketing.

Diane Donnett, owner and manager of Stonewall Gun Shop and Range in Broadview Heights says anytime a tragedy like this happens people react. She says people are not only afraid of copycats, but also of increased gun control legislation.

?The first thing is, okay, the only way to control this from happening again is to put more gun regulations in place,? said Donnett,? But you know what, that?s not going to happen.?

Donnett says gun owners will fight to keep their second amendment right to bear arms.

Support for stricter gun control laws is also at an all-time low. According to a recent Gallup poll it?s dropped from 78 percent in 1990 to just 44 percent last year.

But Diane doesn?t think the Colorado mass shooting is the only reason people want guns. She says the current United Nations small arms treaty that?s being negotiated has people nervous. The treaty is aimed at terrorists but could put gun owners in the United States in the crosshair because it could go after small arms and weapons.

?It?s a backdoor to get rid of the second amendment right because the U.N. can step in and say we don?t want your civilians to have guns,? said Donnett.

If the treaty passes it would have to be ratified by the U.S. Senate.

In the meantime, Diane says people may keep stocking up just in case.

?People are scared,? said Donnett, ?and an armed society is a safe society.?

Shark teeth have built-in toothpaste

An in-depth look at shark teeth has found that they contain fluoride, the active ingredient of most toothpaste and dental care mouthwashes.

It helps to explain why sharks are so effective at either tearing or cutting prey. Their teeth are perfectly designed for such tasks, never suffering from cavities, according to the study, recently published in the Journal of Structural Biology.

NEWS: Shark Paradise Found

While shark teeth contain the mineral fluoroapatite (fluorinated calcium phosphate), the teeth of humans and other mammals contain hydroxyapatite, which is an inorganic constituent also found in bone, explained co-author Matthias Epple.

?In order to make teeth more acid resistant, toothpaste often contains fluoride,? Epple, a professor of inorganic chemistry at the University of Duisburg-Essen, told Discovery News. ?In the surface of human teeth after brushing, a small amount ? much less than 1 percent ? of hydroxide is exchanged by fluoride.?

?In contrast,? he added, ?(the surface of) shark teeth contains 100 percent fluoride. In principle, sharks should not suffer from caries. As they live in water and as they change their teeth regularly, dental protection should not be a problem for sharks.?

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. When it's raining, run, don't walk

When you're caught in a downpour with no umbrella, should you run or walk? Running will get you out of the rain faster, but at the risk of encountering more drops along the way ? and therein lies the dilemma. Now, science gives the go-ahead: in most cases, run.

    2. Searchers find no sign of Amelia Earhart's plane
    3. Loud sex can be deadly for flies
    4. Don't blame Darwin for theater shootings

For the study, Epple and colleagues Joachim Enax, Oleg Prymak and Dierk Raabe used a multitude of high-tech investigative techniques, including scanning electron micrographs, to look at the teeth of two different sharks: the shortfin mako (Isurus oxyrinchus) and the tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier). These sharks were chosen because of their different eating habits. Shortfin makos tear the flesh of prey, while tiger sharks cut flesh.

Despite these differences, the teeth of the both sharks were found to have a similar chemical and crystalline composition. In addition to the highly mineralized enamel exterior, the interior of shark teeth was determined to contain a soft material known as ?dentin,? which contains more protein and is more elastic. Human teeth also have dentin.

Mechanical measurements and tests on the micro and nano-scales determined that shark teeth are not harder than human teeth.

?This finding is surprising, because the mineral fluoroapatite is harder than the mineral hydroxyapatite, so if a tooth were to consist of the mineral alone, a shark tooth would be harder than a human tooth,? Epple said. ?It seems as if the human tooth makes up for the less hard mineral by the special arrangement of the enamel crystals and the protein matrix, and ends up being as hard as a shark tooth.?

He continued that if the teeth of any animal, including humans, were all mineral and super hard, they would be more brittle and prone to shattering. Nature therefore has ways of circumventing this problem, with teeth ?built up from small crystals that are arranged in a special ?architecture? to make them mechanically stronger.? The small amount of protein in teeth, also present in other hard structures like bone and shells, makes these things more elastic.

SHARK WEEK: Don?t Miss the 25th Anniversary of Shark Week

Andrew Gillis, a Dalhousie University biologist, told Discovery News that the new study ?nicely shows how we can see beautiful evidence of adaptation from the level of whole organs all the way down to the nano scale in the chemical nature and organization of crystals within tooth tissues. This sort of work really addresses, at the most fundamental level, how teeth have evolved to deal with the remarkable stresses that they endure in nature.?

Peter Fratzl, a professor at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces, told Discovery News that he was interested to learn that shark teeth are covered with the mineral fluoroapatite.

?It is quite interesting to see that this repeats a very similar and very recent observation about the crayfish mandible, which also turns out to be covered with fluoroapatite although the two species, shark and crayfish, are totally unrelated, but both living under water.?

Fratzl said it?s possible that fluoroapatite coatings are much less water soluble than hydroxyapatite and are therefore ?more stable in water and more resistant against bacterial attack.?

In addition to the unique structure of their teeth, sharks also have the handy ability to replace their teeth several times during their lives. This is not due to cavities, but rather because their teeth sometimes wind up stuck in prey or are otherwise forced out.
